As mailman you have a chance to see some of the postcards the people of your addresses receive, and one of my addresses is always a joy to bring mail. Every day I pass by there are always a couple postcards for her. When I met her last Wednesday I asked her about it and she said she's participating in the postcrossing project. We spoke a bit about it, and I have to say that I like the idea behind it. So I signed up for the Postcrossing project myself yesterday and requested 2 (or maximum 5) addresses to send a postcard to. The first one I had to send to Poland, and the second one to Germany. But when I looked at the recipient's profiles, I saw that it was custom to tell a bit about yourself so that the sender (would be me) can send an appropriate postcard for that person. Well, it sucks to live in Alkmaar then... We used to have an EXPO card shop, but that one closed down a couple of years ago, and 'regular' postcards are hard to find, other than the tourist ones ![]() So for my 1st postcard I wasn't able to find an appropriate but, but I knew what I wanted to send if I could find one (old crime movie postcard). The second one was easy though. She loves buildings, and our Waag is one of the buildings on a lot of tourist cards, so I picked the best one I could find ![]() Speaking with a local cigarette shopkeeper around the corner yesterday and talking about my postcard dilemma, he agreed that there are too few good card shops in Alkmaar. He did mention one that has a good collection (one I completely forgot about), but that one is rather expensive as well. He also mentioned those free cards that used to be at movie houses and café's, but in Alkmaar those are no longer offered. And that made me think of Amsterdam... In my 'younger years', those free cards could be found all over Amsterdam, and I called my mother to ask about them. Luckily she used to collect them (she has a couple of shoe-boxes full with them, including a large stock of doubles), and I asked if she could pick up those postcards for me. Of course, the said yes, and since she'll be visiting today, I hope she's been able to pick up some 'new ones'. But if she was not able to, she'd grab a couple of doubles from her collection for me anyway, so that I can start postcrossing the coming weeks. Ans speaking about it... As you might have noticed, I've made a new category for postcrossing. I'll drop all received cards in it to show off what I have received. I will include the country of origin as well... |
