Dutch banks

Like many banks in the world, most of the Dutch banks have received governmental support as well. Personally, I have accounts at two different banks, and so far I didn't bother about the governmental support they have received. It was not like there changed anything in their day to day handling of my accounts. That was until this year started... The ABN-AMRO decided to up all costs for the accounts and services with 20%. So far I didn't care. I mean, it's not that an increase of 20% will influence me that much, since it's about 5 per year maximum. Last Friday we received a statement from our Fortis FREE account, and they decided to charge us 1 a month for it. And that did it. We have that account for their convenience, so that they can withdraw the mortgage for our house easily. We took the account on their advice, and now they pull a stunt like this ![]() With this, Fortis drew the line for me considering the banks who have accepted Governmental support. These banks didn't learn a thing from the current economic crisis. They still give the top-positions huge bonus's, and on top of that they even charge me (their customer) extra for nothing! These banks don't even pay debit interest, while we never have used their credit facilities. Because of that we (my wife and I) decided to leave both banks and go to the green ASN bank. My mother recommended them before to us, but we were happy with both ABN-AMRO and Fortis (until now). Now we're in the process of move all our accounts there, and on top of that, all the insurance we have from both banks will be canceled at the first opportunity. And our mortgage..? We're stuck with that for the coming 2 years. When we have to reevaluate it, we'll most likely will leave Fortis for that as well. |
