I've been busy yesterday calling around about that € 1 our bank is charging from out of nowhere. The reason to for it is that the account was free, and we took the account as service to the bank to monthly auto-debit the mortgage. Since this auto-debit is formally declared with the purchase of our house, there's little we can do to cancel the auto-debit So after a week, a lot of calls and frustration later, yesterday I took the phone and went up two steps higher: The Dutch Authority Financial Market. I only did this because the bank refused our request to return that € 1 into our account. The AFM can't do anything for me but make a note of the incident, which is enough for me. The AFM also suggested to make a formal written complaint about it with our bank. But stubborn as I am, I called our bank first once more. There I (finally) managed to speak out contact and I told him that I wanted to cancel the account because of the sudden charge of costs. He told me (once again) it was impossible because of the auto-debit. And again we heard the story that they have to charge that € 1 to maintain the account, since maintaining an account costs money (what a load of bullshit - we don't take any service from this bank other than plunge our money in the account so they can withdraw it again). I somewhat told him bluntly to screw it and that I had a right to cancel any contract if the terms on the contract are changed one-sided (which is the case here). I think he didn't expect that one to come, and he advised me to write him a letter with the formal complaint about the sudden change of the terms and tell him we'd cancel the account. I also had to opt I'd only keep the account if the old terms of the contract were re-instated. When he receives the letter, he'd consult his CEO and see what they can do for me. ...I think he just needed a formal complaint to change things back the way they were. Well, the letter is ready, all we now have to do is add a copy of our ID's and drop the letter at his office... Oh... I had a huge headache after I was done yesterday. Luckily it's back to the background again
